What is the difference in the dual snout air cleaner base from 63 to 65 base engines

63 - Oil breather tube is in the front, 64/65 - oil brether tube is in the back. 63 did not have a flame arrestor.

Yes, and because of the no flame arrestor, I lost my original Valve covers due to a crankcase explosion.

When fuel vapors are present in the crankcase and are ignited, something has to give. The weakest link are the valve covers. The vapors in my engine were the result of a sticking PCV valve which came about after a long storage of the car. You try to think of everything when you prepare your engine for a long period of storage, but the PCV valve wasn't one of them. The engine came through it fine, however. In large Diesel engine applications for ships they use spring loaded relief valves in place of a number of handhold covers to vent the explosive force should it occur.
