65-67 seat backs: how were they made?

I have looked around and it seems that people's opinion of the 65-67 seat backs aren't to good, and its been recommended to use originals if you can. What I would like to know now is how were the originals made?

Are they a colored plastic to match the interior, or a generic plastic color that was painted to match the interior?

my 65 white backs were white plastic. The door pulls were also molded white plastic.

At what point are the originals not as good as reproduction point wise ? Mine are scratched & dented but not cracked ?

Ok it seems best then to stay with the same color seat back and then it can be dyed to freshen it up (this could use it's own thread I guess). Anyway, are there any good restoration tip for bringing an original back back to life, like how to remove or at least diminish scratches, best dye to use, etc?

Check with a vinyl repair person on repairing the scratches.
