    E69 Expansion Tank

I just want to confirm the the 2 expansion tanks that I have are K8 and that would be incorrect for my C04 69 coupe Base Model. Would I be looking for a I or J 68 tank.
    Thank You for your time

    Re: E69 Expansion Tank

Roger, K8 is October, 1968 and since your car was built October 4th, 1968 it's a little early, but not impossible. October 4th, 1968 was a Friday, so they had 3 days to manufacture that tank and get it to your car. Again, not impossible, but a little improbable.

There's no I code used, so you would look for a J8 (September, 1968).

However, not all engines came with an expansion tank. What engine do you have? I'm assuming from your "Base model" comment it's a 350/300? If so, do you have A/C? Also, which transmission do you have?

Hi Ed, yes base model no AC with a 4spd. My donor car is an exact duplicate except it is a D05 one month later. Now I have 2 tanks. Just an FYI the donor still had the original Harrisson alum. radiator. So I brought it to an old radiator shop and the oldtimer said "haven't seen one of these in a long time. Building a corvette I see". They pressure tested it and it needed no repairs. I asked him if the radiator was good and he said " ther ain't a damn thing wrong with it . They don't makem like this anymore". Pretty amazing I thought.

Yep. In that case, unless you get conflicting data from another C04 car, I would just use one of the K8 tanks.

By the way, what's the date code on your radiator?

Yes, there should be a letter following the 68. For example 68A would be January, 1968. 68B would be February, 1968, etc...

Looks Like an I or J. Looking at a picture. Will be easier when I get it back later today. If I can't use it I should be able to sell it since it is now restored.

I don't believe the letter I was used so it's probably J, which would be September, 1968.

I see no reference in the TIM/JG that I was not used. I will check that when I get it back. While I have you the rad cap would be #15 RC26?

Anyway this is all mute. The radiator is a 68L which is after my build date so up for sale it goes.

The TIM&JG doesn't reference it, but Bizzoco's Guidebook does. It says the letter I wasn't used, but the problem with his book is that it's a little outdated (written in 1994) and a lot of new information has come to light about things he wrote about, so it may not be correct. Still a good reference, but I wish he would come out with another up-to-date edition.

Yes, you should have the RC26 cap, but there were a few different versions so post a picture and we can tell you if it's the "correct" one.

                      Roger,
Are you sure your tag says "C" O4. The reason I'm asking is because "G" trim tags look like the letter C in 1969. It's a very common mistake and causes all kinds of confusion with February built cars. Many cars made in Feb 69 had there tags replaced because owners didn't know better. You will see the letter B on Feb cars with tags replaced (because they think B is Feb) or the letter G that actually looks like a G. Recheck against your VIN. If your car has a low serial number then its a C.

Ed the vin is 194379S703636. I wouldn't put ANYTHING passed the previous owner for screwing things up. Is this vin early, mid, or late?

The car was built somewhere around Oct. 3 1968. I'd drop the use of early or late with respect to the car as a whole. You'll just confuse an already confusing subject.

Ok your car is a C car. If your vin was around 714500 to 717500 it would have been a G coded car.
