    Micro Wheel Weights

I am in the process of purchasing micro wheel weights for my 67. I have a few questions, do they have to have the split at the ends?? And do they have to say micro for full judging points ??

    Re: Micro Wheel Weights

Enzo, There were 3 or 4 suppliers for wheel weights in the 60's. There was a great article in the Restorer a few years back describing them all. To answer your question, I think the Micro brand had the "wingtip" configuration on each end for all but the 1/2 oz size. Micro is cast into them along with weight marked in ounces. No metric values.

Hello Tracy, So I can assume that if there are no wings but still say MICRO they are not correct ???
They are marked in ounces also ... Thanks

I am no wheel weight expert but that sounds like a non typical MICRO configuration.

          Enzo,

We might be able to help you more if you post an image of the weight you're talking about.

            Re: Micro Wheel Weights

Enzo, original weights had "wings" to them on the upper portion of the weight where it meets the lip of the rim. Originals will have the size of the weight in ounces on each end of the weight - NOT in ounces on end and grams of the other end. I can send you pics tonight if you want some. Remind me with a text. For example, an original will say 1.25 on the left side, micro, then 1.25 on the right side. Later weights will say 1.25 on the left side and 400 (or some larger number) on the right that is in grams. ARA

And check your AIM for the weights used. On my '62, this is Section 10, page 1. On my '62, the only weights used were .50 oz, 1.00 oz, 1.50 oz, 2.50 oz, and 3.50 oz.

My AIM shows the weight being applied to the outside of the wheel. But I seem to remember that the weights were only applied to the inside.

In the day, if you could, you'd rotate the tire on the rim to try and get it balanced without the use of a weight. Took a fair amount of trial and error to get it. Sometimes you couldn't balance the wheel that way. But at least you minimized the amount of weight used.

I remember doing that Also, there was typically a colored dot on the side of the tire and it was said that if you lined this dot up with the valve stem the tire would balance out better, as well. I always did this (made me feel good anyways).

Hi Ara, I think we spoke about this once last year. I will check what I need and let you know. A pic on TDB would be great also for others to view... Thanks Enzo

Ara . I would love to see photos of original ,correct weights for a 65 . I have a bucket of old weights from the 70s most are in ounces but not many Micros . I probably melted the micros for fishing weights .

For judging couldn't you just not have any weights ? Not every assembly needed weights although most did.

Ara I just went through all my old Restorers and found an excellent article on wheel weights by Gary Beaupre .It was in Volume 31 #3 & vol.32 # 1. Lots of good photos . If the information has changed I would like to hear about it .

                            John -

Although very remotely possible (and a statistical anomaly) to have "no weights", it's not "typical of factory production" to have five wheels with no weights and specified balance.

                              Bill,
I don't have easy access to that issue so it's hard to say. Gary knows his stuff though. Give me your email and I will happily shoot you some pics of TFP weights. I took some pics the other night.
ironically we just encountered the issue John spoke of at the Lakeland FL regionals. I couldn't have said it better than John. Though it's theoretically possible to have 5 wheels that are perfectly balanced, it's just not TFP. Just my opinion.
                              Regards
                              Ara
