I am adding power steering to my 1970 CTU LT1. I have removed the 6 quart oil pan and replaced with a 5 quart. I purchased a refurbished power steering kit. My question is does anyone know what the belt configuration would have been on later 1970 LT1's that had power steering. The AIM does not show the belt configuration for the LT1 with the smog pump.

Re: 1970 LT1 power steering belt configuration
Not totally on topic, but if your power steering kit did not come with a p/s Pitman arm, be aware that it requires one that's different from manual steering. Found this out when researching the parts books when I set up my car with p/s many years ago. I would check my parts book for you, but I'm 1,000 mi. from home right now.
Quanta, who sells repro belts, should have the proper setup for you.- Top

Inner groove surrounds waterpump, crank, and alternator pulleys.
Middle groove surrounds waterpump, crank, and power steering pulleys.
Outer groove surrounds waterpump and AIR pump pulleys.
waterpump pulley (2 groove)= GM #3848904 (later GM #3995641)
waterpump pulley (1 groove--add-on-AIR driver)= GM #3883235
crank pulley= GM #3858533
power steering pump pulley= GM #3834720
AIR pump pulley= GM #3917234
Alternator pulley= GM #1970381 (later GM #3844100)In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1970 LT1 power steering belt configuration
Joe,
I'm not sure about the '70 LT1, but my late production, '69 350 hp, required the hi-horse, deep groove pulley for the AIR pump, I think the last three digits of the pn are 458. Don't have my parts book to check though.
If I recall correctly, the LT1 was scheduled to be a '69 model, but never made it.- Top

1969 L-46 did use the GM #3932458 AIR pump pulley. However, GM says that all 1970-72 LT-1 used the 3917234In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1970 LT1 power steering belt configuration
Thanks Joe!! You explained very well! I have all the correct pulleys. I was confused because I was given a single add-on pulley for the crank Part # GM 3751232BB as part of the power steering kit. I see now that I do not need to use the additional pulley. I just need to get a larger belt to go in the middle groove to surround waterpump, crank, and power steering pulley. John.- Top

The add-on crank pulley, GM #3751232, is used with small blocks with standard groove pulleys and power steering. It is used in conjunction with a stamped steel power steering pump pulley. You need the cast iron power steering pump pulley, GM #3834720.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
