The original frame stencil on my '57 is in great shape under a thin layer of black enamel (I think) overspray from my car's only repaint in about 1970. The outlines of the stencil are showing through fairly well, so there's not much overspray on it. Any idea how to safely remove the overspray without damaging the stencil, or is it best to just leave it alone?

Re: how to remove overspray from original frame stencil?
I think I would start out avioding solvents and use a clay bar and wax. Wax has a very mild abrasive and can pull up light overspray. Polishing or rubbing compound is a little more abrasive. I have used them for parking lot paint transfers.- Top

Michael,
Can you provide a little more explanation here..... How would this work. Is the wax ( what type) used under the clay bar, etc.?
thanks for sny explanation you can offer.

Re: how to remove overspray from original frame stencil?
I am suggesting an abrasive approach over using solvent. Not knowing how much over spray and how dry it was when it settled, I am suggesting to start with the lightest and moving to something more aggressive if needed. I have used a clay bar for removing unintended over spray on painted surfaces. Sometimes simply using wax will remove over spray or paint transfer. Moving up from there is polish and then rubbing compound, both mild abrasives. Once you start working on it and get an area of the original stencil to show like you want it, tape the area so that you don't go too far while working on other areas.- Top

I used a little kerosene and pad. I was laying on my back out in the driveway in the sun. I should have had better lighting under the car and the right side would have been fine. See pic.Attached Files- Top
