67 clear plastic mats, worthless or not?

About six months ago a yellowed pair of original 67 plastic floor mats sold for over $900 on Ebay. Yesterday I bought an original clear plastic pair with the Bowtie on the front and the part numbert on the bottom rear also on Ebay for $65.00! Sure is crazy, but I was the only bidder.

Some folks may like them but I do not. They kept sliding up under the gas pedal on my 63. A black set with lots of little fingers keeps the mat in place.

Since they were not installed at the factory, they are totally useless and unnecessary anyway for judging. Why would anyone want them?

I have a pair that have been with the car apparently for quite some time (well over 20 years). They are yellowed but they do stay reasonably in place. I thought I'd buy a new clear pair but when I put them in the car it was like putting my feet on ice. They wouldn't stay in place unless you didn't have your feet on them. I put the originals back in and would have liked to have known about the new mats before I bought them. I guess I need to check the archives before I make a purchase like that. I do like the clear as opposed to some I've seen. They are a little more modest and subtle.

I have a picture of a brand new '65 with floor mats installed and they are the same color and the pair I had delivered new last week for a car. I like the aged ones, I can leave the new ones in the sun for a bit.

Accepting they are not factory installed or needed for judging, value is in the eyes of the beholder. I have a restored '65 that came with yellowed original clear mats. My friend has a survivor '65 with lots of patina; and had after market black mats. I told him that if he ever wanted my original mats, I would be willing to trade them for repros. After several months, he came with new clear repros and we traded. The yellowed originals look appropriate in his car and the new clear in mine. That being said, the originals are significantly thicker (and therefore heavier) than the repros; and while the originals did slip, the repros are horrible and do nothing but slip like a skater on ice. My buddy put the black after markets back in for driving. I am trying to think up with a simple solution to get the repros to not slide.

I use carpet floor mats because I like the look and they are less noticeable. I do carry a set of repro plastics when on the road tour or long drive for when it rains. My cars are "real" Corvettes, they leak like a sieve! Don H.
