The finish appears "massaged" to me too. I was wondering about the font, but I don't own the Trim Tag book. I was hoping that someone who does could examine the photo for us.

Doesn't appear to be a GM tag.

I inspected the car in Stafford, Texas early 2014. The inspection was over once I saw the repro Trim tag. I believe the guys selling the car on consignment had no idea the car was altered. The motor pad was sprayed with paint. Otherwise...the car looked frame-off and un-hit body nice paint.

The above trim tag with body number S4901 is not the trim tag that is pictures on the web site, where the car is for sale. That body number is S5702. Based on the poor pic on the web site, the tag looks more typical than the one above. Only an in person inspection will give you a clear picture of the car.

            If you Google the VIN...
I borrowed the trim tag photo above from here:

Though I see the same VIN is used on this website here:

Well, this car lit up the discussion in a really bad way. I heard from another guy outside the forum that said the photo of the tag in the ad aren't really even from the car for sale! Thanks to all of you for the great advice! You're keeping a new member out of trouble!

Are these zeros typical on the pad? The pad does seem consistent sites between the two sites, right down to the paint scraped off. I don't see much in the way of broach marks though. Why would they remove the correct valve covers and air cleaner that was on the car on the chequeredflag.com site and put the wrong ones on the car as it currently has. All seems really strange.

Just trying to learn, my gut would say Run Forest Run. Which I think James has already came to that conclusion.

This car has been all over the place in the last few years. Easy to understand why some parts may have been loaned out. There were not very many red / red leather L78's built so it is a very striking rare combo, but there were very few L78's with leather. Also strange that in what appears to be a quality frame off that a number of small detail items were overlooked. Also between 2011 and 2013 the fan shroud went from original to re-po ???

I highly suspect that pad is a restamp - not "typical production". It looks too good... no wear on any of the dies and die holder so the impressions are all even depth and the characters are lined up very straight. Typical stamps look knarly to one degree or another due to different die wear for the various characters along with die/holder wear that causes some characters to be slightly out of line or slightly cocked.

The first time I saw one that looked that good was back in the late seventies at the Pomona swap meet.

The 0's on the pad are definitly not seen in Tonawanda and the T is also not typical.

Agree with Pat on the engine pad.

The Trim Tag shown in Post #11 appears very similar in look and appearance to one that was recently sold by Chicago Corvette as a reproduction/replacement tag. I used that CC example as a "not factory typical" in a recent seminar I gave our chapter on C2 Trim and VIN Tags.

Sounds like a nice looking but "made up" 1965 396 car. A very thorough first hand inspection by a knowledgeable C2 person is necessary before settling on price. Car does not appear to be a good candidate for NCRS TOP FLIGHT, but that may not matter to the OP.

Many thanks to all of you. Had the car inspected today by a member and it's a mess. Naturally I'm passing on this one. Again the feedback was very helpful and much appreciated! Jim
