    Screw Hole Repair

Several years ago a guy was selling a door panel screw hole repair kit that consisted of plastic inserts that you had to make a square hole for. They were just like some license plate plastic inserts only smaller. I believe he also did steering wheel restoration. If someone could direct me to this person I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks

those plastic inserts force the door panel to protrude towards the center of the cockpit and an observant judge can see the inserts and see that the door panel is not in its original position. i tried them about 30 years ago and didn't care for them. instead, i cut a piece of 18 or 20 gauge sheet metal into multiple 1 1/2 " squares, then pop rivet them to the backside of the door's framing. this will never pull the trim screws. mike

Thanks Mike but I'm not using them on door panels, I found out the hard way just like you that they are not the best solution for door panels. We are working on another project and I think they will be the best solution for it.

Mike with the new 3M epoxies I would bond the metal to the inside of the door and not worry about the rivets showing . some of them dry in less than 1 minute .

A CHEAP alternative (if it's hidden) is the old paperclip trick. If the hole's not too far gone, you can unfold a paperclip, bend into a U shape and insert it in the hole. The thickness of the paperclip takes up just enough room so the screw now has something to grab onto. There are a few sized paperclips available, anywhere from very thin to fairly thick, so you should be able to find one that suits you. I've been using this trick for almost 50 years!

You can buy those plastic push in nuts in various sizes at most autobody supply shops.

I have one of those square hole repair kits that I bought several years back ... they are very good ... much better than the plastic wall anchors some use. The flange on them is very thin....I don't see how anybody could detect them behind a door panel. If they can they you didn't use them correctly. I think I got them off eBay.

Search eBay for "Dodge truck grill nuts". Year range from about 1986 through 1990. Probably just what you're looking for.

Corvette Central has sold a "hole repair kit" for many years that includes ten pre-cut steel panels with rivet holes already pierced, and 20 pop-rivets to install them with; you put them on the back side of the fiberglass part you're working on, then you just drill the size hole you need in the steel panel and you have a solid attachment.

Fill the oversized hole and surrounding area with a glue gun.
