C2 Luggage Stop Panel or whatever it is called

The thin steel panel behind the seats is what I have a question about. My car is a 66 Coupe and I have removed the panel as I have been cleaning the interior for restoration. My panel was bent in a number of places, I'm sure from years of people pushing on it. Also there is a cut in the center top of the folded reinforcement edge (as best as I can describe it) which you can see in the attached pictures. Due to the cut through the fold, this area is very weak.

I have straightened it, but it still seems flimsy and will easily bend again where the reinforcement is cut. As I see it, I have two options, one is to weld a piece of 1/4" flat steel along the top edge under the folded reinforcement, or purchase a reproduction.

Has anyone purchased one of the reproduction parts, and if so, what was you experience with it? I see from the picture in Paragon's on-line catalog that the rivet holes seem to already be in place, so I'm a little concerned that they will match up to the existing holes in the body.

    Thanks,

The way I stiffen them up is by taking a 3/8 diameter steel rod (stainless steel might be even stronger) and cut it to the full length of the top of the panel. I then force it up into the top folded over lip from the backside as far as it will go. It is completely out of sight and strengthens the panel significantly. It is held into place by the sheer tight fit. If the rod isn't quite tight enough to hold it into place, it is easy to close the folded over lip slightly.

      Don,

I actually have done what you propose by welding a rectangular piece of steel all the way across under the lip and it worked out very well and provides a super strong repair. It is completely hidden in the channel and invisible once the carpet is installed. I also like the fact that it provides some more strength to the body area connecting both sides. Well worth doing if you have the ability or can get a local welder to do it for you. That's the way GM should have built it I/M/O. Good luck, Dan

        Thanks for your responses.

I'll go looking for some small rectangular stock. I know the one I removed fits the rivet hole, so I would rather save and use it than replace it.
