C2 vette, VIN stamped into the frame

    2 part question.

Was it done the same for all years '63-'67?

Why did GM/Chevrolet stamp the number twice on the left side?

I believe so. Probably easier to stamp on one side than to go on the other side. I assume it was to stop chop shops from piecing frames together

I believe 63-65 stamp locations were the same, but for the 66 and 67's the second stamp (rear most) was further back than 63-65 were. 63-65 was near the upper shock mount and the 66-67 closer to the body mount.

      Can't answer the second question.

There is a front location for a serial number stamp on a mid year ? Please enlighten me, I was only aware of the rear.

The second location is on the top of the frame rail approximately at the location of the seats. It cannot be seen with the body mounted on the frame. Why? Well, I suppose someone figured out that the rear stamping could, theoretically, be obliterated (but NOT restamped) by grinding with the body on the frame. So, a secondary location was chosen that could not be altered in any way with the body on the frame.

Some info in this thread recently. John Hinckley clarifies application years and where the stamps are. See post#16.

Also, as in C1 frame stamps, I recall John stating once that the stamp machine required it to be hit twice to advance to the next sequencial number, and that's why all frames have two stampings. Hopefully John can clarify that here when he checks in.

              That pretty much covers it.

An internal error has occurred and the module cannot be displayed.
