Paint recommendation for '96 LT1 exhaust tips

    04.jpg

I just cleaned up the mufflers and exhaust tips for my '96 CE LT1 and painted with Rustoleum 2,000 degree flat black paint. It looks great but I think the finish is too flat. Any recommendations for the correct paint to use for a finish coat? Thanks, Paul

84-96 Service Bulletin 33-17-01A described peeling paint from 93-96 mufflers. When I noticed minor peeling on my 96 I called my local dealer and he was told to order Indy Sales & Service Touch - Up Sprays Industrial Finishes Paint - on the label it reads "KB-318-HHHS Black TU 07/15/2."

This rattle-can paint touched up my chips, and blended in, perfectly. My only complaint was it literally took several weeks to fully cure, and in the meantime it attracted a small amount of dirt/debris when driving - but that was years ago and I'm still very happy with the results today.

Pat, the paint we used was VHT SP671 (satin black). It goes on very even and levels nicely. I've experimented with a few and I think this one gives the closest correct appearance. I would use the same paint for the muffler, but just over-spray or lightly mist coat the very top section. Just my two cents.

Slow drying paints can be extremely inconvenient. However, slow drying paints are also the most durable.

Interesting Joe, I didn't know that. Well, this paint must be really durable.

If you are looking for durability, try the POR-15 semi-flat (just make sure it's sprayed). Still has a fairly correct looking appearance and it's super tough.
