    53-55 Headlight screen

What was the reason for the headlight screens on the 53-55 Corvette? Was is to prevent stones from hitting headlamps?

Styling. Mesh is too coarse to stop small stones and not stout enough to stop good sized ones.

Found and old post on the Corvette forum and poster claims styling had nothing to do with it. That poster said early road racers used them to protect headlight from flying debris. Maybe the designers on the early Corvettes thought some were going racing?

If you had already decided on your answer, why did you ask? Road racers generally used a stouter screen. For daytime racing they often taped over the headlights.

Because your answer did not sound complete enough. As I continue to search web pagers I continue to find more information. Apparently Harley Earl wanted the screens on the 53 Corvette because that is what european sports cars at the time were using. I don't know which cars had them but according to the reasearcher they impressed Harley Earl, and that is why they were on the early Corvette. Source of information Bruce Caldwell .

I do believe that would be styling, as per my first post.

Yep, your right, and every other little piece of information about these car's just seems to fascinate me more and more every time.
