    Vinyl Dye Spray

    Hi all,

I'm using the spray vinyl dye on some door panels and I put on coat after coat and can after can and am just barely seeing a color change. I don't even have visible overspray on the cardboard beneath.

So, is this the way vinyl dye spray is supposed to be, or do I have a batch of defective product??

    Merry Christmas!

    Bob,
Whose dye are you using? My 66 is supposed to have dark blue interior and was changed to black at some point. I've been experimenting with dye from Long Island Corvette and Corvette America. Definitely different shades, but both are covering the black vinyl on the sun visors

      Don,

It is the Corvette America dye. Is Long Island's better? Can't be much worse!

      Thanks,

I'd be hard pressed to say one is better than the other. When I bought the Corvette America dye I also got their prep spray and adhesion promoter. But I'm just starting to experiment.

I am a big fan of Corvette America dye. Never used it to change color. Just to freshen up. And it did a great job

            Bob,
What color are you using? I had success using Corvette America's dark blue shade on metal and vinyl parts. It took maybe 3 to 4 coats for full coverage. I didn't use any primers just the dye in the spray can. On some parts I tried the semi gloss coating after the dye and didn't care for the look at all, and covered them with the dye again. I would call them about the problems you are having.

Maybe the color you're spraying is not much different than the color already on the door panels so you aren't seeing a change. I used Corvette America's red dye on the inside of my split window on the dash pad center console and some interior trim and it worked fine. You don't necessarily have to use their prep products but you DO have to degrease and scrub the snot out of whatever you want to spray before applying the dye. Simple Green and a brush works. If you are spraying as much as you say you may be filling the grain in your dash pads too - you want to watch that...

Many years ago, I had great success using Dye products I got from Mid America. I did the entire head liner of my hard top, my center consule side panels and the rear panels that enclose the convertible top frame. I ordered and saved 3 more cans because it worked so well, and recently did some side "kick panel" speaker panels, but haven't installed them yet. The dye still works great. I keep it in the house out of the Florida heat and humidity so I hope it stays fresh.

Frank, how is the sheen on the Corvette America red dye? I need to touch up an original red door panel and the CA dye appears to be flatter than original. Thanks.

Well - I actually think it's near perfect and matches my Al Knoch repro dash pads quite closely...here is a panoramic of my '63 interior showing the dyed center console. I put on two coats with the last one a tad 'wet' to bump up the luster a bit - but you don't want to overdo it and start filling up the grain...

CA has a vinyl dye clear coat which I didn't use over the red as it had an even more satin-like sheen to it....

                          Bob,
I changed the interior color on a 74 Coupe from black to red with Corvette America dye. This was some years ago, but the dye worked great. I used both spray cans and bulk quarts, that I applied with a spray gun. The trick I found was in the prep, as with any painting project. I needed to remove all the silicone and grease from all the panels, then before spraying, I wiped down with lacquer thinner. You need to paint in low humidity conditions, the moisture will turn the dyed area white, where there is moisture.
The gloss with be determined by how wet the spray was applied. If to glossy then you need to knock it down with a scotch brite pad.
The bottom line is the Corvette America Dye was a fine product.

I used to find partially used spray cans of VIP in the new cars when I unloaded the new GM cars at the rail yard in the late 70's that's how I found out about it.
