    C1 hardtop question

Approx how heavy is C1 hardtop? Can it be removed by one person and are the side glasses safety glass?

Some sites list it at 55 or 57 pounds.I used to get in the car squat under the center and pick it up and step out of the car. Not everyone can do that. Two people or an adult and child can easily lift it off and walk to the rear of the car.

the top is not heavy but it is awkward. unless you get under it and lift as joe said which is also not easy i would recommend 2 people. but make sure its someone you trust because you really have to lean a little towards the middle when walking it back or front. the windows are all made of plexiglass

56 lbs is right on for a 61-62 top and prob the earlier ones. Sides and rear windows are date-coded plexiglass. Installing without a helper or a hoist is a sure way to ding up your paint unless you are VERY careful and somewhat lucky. As noted, the center of gravity is not where you think it would be just by looking at it.

I have "made" my wife help me for almost 40 years. I would refer to the GM ad that shows a woman doing it. As stated, it is not that heavy but very awkward. I used a hard top hoist for years because I could do it by myself and the hardtop was off the floor. I quit using a hoist because it bothered me to see it hanging over the car . . . paranoid I guess. I still love the hardtop look and the interior driving environment when it is on. My $0.02! Don H.

They totally change the C1 driving experience. Becomes more like a C2 coupe. More light and airier than the soft top, more visibility, less road noise and changes the look of the car. However, in Florida, I've only had mine on 2-3 times... If the lower rear window rubber is stiff it can work a number on your deck lid paint. Some vendors sell vinyl "strips" to go under there for protection.

While we are on the subject, is the hardtop the answer to stopping rain leaks?

Not really (well, maybe partially). The hardtop header strip seems to seal more tightly across the top of the windshield than the soft top so that helps stop leaks in that area. Many C1 leaks however are via the cowl vent, the upper door gutter jamb sealing and door jamb rubber weatherstrip.
Then, of course, there are those who forget to put dum-dum on the two most rearward screw studs on the top stainless fender 'windsplits'...on the back of the cove side spears (58-61) and the windshield wiper arm cowl holes...all prime water intrusion areas.

Of course, improperly sealing the windshield UNDER the frame along the body can be a major source of leaks as well !!
