    Original 62 Air Cleaner?

Does the air cleaner in the attached pictures look like an original 1962 air cleaner? Does the flame arrestor material look correct? Does the brass ring look correct? Do the louvers look correct?

It does not look like the current reproduction but I am not sure some of the details look correct.

    Thanks in advance,
    Mike Harpster

It looks like my 1960 I will try to take some pictures and will post them there is a write up in the 58-60 restoration handbook that tells many of the details.

      Phil,

Thanks for the response. I have 58-60 restoration book and it is appearance of the brass eyelet on the flame arrestor side that makes me think this might be a reproduction. The flame arrester material looks a little odd to me was well.

Here are a few older photos I will get out to the car later today. This air cleaner was in pretty rough shape but appeared to never have been taken apart until I got my hands on it. I did use the original grommet managed to remove with out too much damage.

          Mike,

Bring it to a tech session and show it to Richard Dunham if you're wondering about it. I'm sure he can tell you.

              Phil,

That is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks... Unfortunately, everything I own or am looking at buying is not original. At least now I know better what it should look like. For anyone that reads this thread in the future, I have been told that original C1 air cleaners had vertical lines at the ends of some of the louvers. You can see these lines in Phil's close-up of the louvers.

              Thanks again,
              Mike

                Patrick,

I am pretty sure everything I have or am looking at buying is wrong. The good news is I have lots of pictures of incorrect parts. If the story has a happy ending I was thinking about writing something for the MI NCRS Vette Signal.

                Merry Christmas,
                Mike

LOL. That's funny; not so much though for your pocket book.

Mike, I cannot remember where I bought this but it looked like it had been used as a drum. I have another without the flame arrestor that was also in pretty poor condition but managed to make it look presentable. They show up from time to time on Ebay normally in rough condition but with a little work they can be repaired.

                      Re: Original 62 Air Cleaner?

The original air cleaner pieces were held together by a one piece brass eyelet as Philip's photo shows. The air cleaner in question has a 2 piece grommet attaching the two pieces together; like all reproductions have. Check the spacing between the sets of louvers. The spacing on the repros is irregular; some spaces wide, others narrow. Original air cleaners had equal spacing between louvers and light vertical striations across the louvers. Does the spark arrestor fabric have any red and blue colored threads in it? Repros do, originals do not.

If the spacing between louvers is equal and the spark arrestor fabric is all brown, it could be that it is original and someone took it apart and possibly flipped the spark arrestor fabric over to the good side and then reattached with a two piece grommet.
