    Wiper Motor will not park

Have bench tested wiper motor with the following results. Ground from case to battery, brown wire to positive. Motor starts up immediately, ground out the yellow wire runs at high speed, add the blue to ground, runs at slow speed, release both yellow and blue wires and motor runs with clicking sound and will not park. I have cleaned out old lube using brake cleaner and re-lubed everything. Is there something else that I missed?

    Jay,
This won't help much but I took my 63 and 67 wiper motors apart and rebuilt them. They ae some what of a challenge as you know. I followed the test procedure and had both not work correctly at first. Then I installed one in my 67 and it wasn't doing what it was supposed to. I had the motor grounded and the switch plugged in, but the cluster was out. It was hot and I began to lightly perspire. Bingo, I had the switch in one hand and grabbed the grounded bird cage and felt the 12V. I also then grounded my switch and it sparked as the wire touched it. Every thing worked with the switch and motor both grounded. I then tested my 63 motor and it did the same till I grounded the switch.
Last week I installed the cluster and was testing each instrument and went to install the wiper switch and it sparked looking for a ground on the cluster.
I think the book is not quite clear on the test procedures as many have had the same problem bench testing the wipers. By the way, the brushes for the wiper motor and headlight motors were at a small auto electric shop that did alternators and starters. I got a hand full for 5 bucks.

Re: Wiper Motor will not park

I don't have any thing to refer to near me, but I can confirm (or deny) this later.

The normal operation of the motor relies on the ground through the spade terminals. The depressed park relies on grounding through the case. Double check your case ground.

If that's okay, I believe there are two sets of contacts under the cover plate. One is set(1st) is closed when there is no grounding through the terminals (wipers off). The other (2nd) is closed while the wiper is in, or has been in, it's normal direction of rotation and the park lever is pulled out of it's resting position. When this occurs the motor will reverse rotation and the park arm will slide into it's park position and open the second set of points stopping the motor. When the switch is turned on again the 1st set opens, the motor turns in normal direction and the park lever is pulled out of it's parked position, closing those points.

So the next step would be circuit tracing the park circuit. First thing I would look to is the contact points.

      Steve

Edit, It may be one set of points activated by the two different inputs. I'd have to look at one to check. But follow the park lever linkage and look for the points it opens.

Case ground seems to be ok, first chance I get I'll circuit trace and find the contact points. Thanks for the info

My switch is still in the car so with the wiper motor out, I'll re-attach the wiring and ground the case and see what happens. Thanks

            Jay,
That's how I did it with exception that the cluster ground was also off and found that it would only run at low speed till I grounded the cluster and tightened the switch. Both motors acted the same without the ground.
When I permenently mounted the motor the black ground wire wasn't grounded that connected to the motor. I found the ground wire was not connected and when I connected it all worked.
I have found that when something does not work right it's usually the ground on these glass cars.
