When I disassembled my original shifter, I did not pay attention to which dowel went in which position on the main shaft, upon close examination they are different. Anyone crossed this bridge before .. Any hints on upgrading, thinking about adding a thin plastic washer between handle and mount plate for vibration.

Re: 1962 4speed shifter rebuild
The metal dowel that pins the handle to the cross shifting shaft should be flush on both sides of handle when inserted. From the photo, I would guess it's the one on the right. I could not tell for certain without disassembling mine.

Re: 1962 4speed shifter rebuild
Dino,
I rebuilt mine several years ago. I used plastic from one of those packages where you have to use a Saws-all to get the thing open. It is about the right thickness and it is tough as nails. I have attached a PDF file of the instructions that someone else wrote and I followed. They worked well for me and my shifter works smooth and doesn't rattle nearly as much as before.

Re: 1962 4speed shifter rebuild
Thanks for the document John.......and all the responses. I reassembled the rebuilt shifter today....the dowel pictured on the left is the floating pin that selects the proper lever.....the one on the right with the grooves holds the handle to the shaft and also provides a pivot action on the shift lever.Dino Lanno- Top
