    Who buys caliper and PS valve cores now?

    I've accumulated about 2 dozen brake calipers and 4 or 5 PS valve cores over the years and I'm actually trying to clean up the shop a little. Corvette Central only pays $25 for calipers and freight from Ga. to Michigan would eat that up. Anybody know of vendors at Lakeland that might take 'em on the spot?

    Freight cost is almost always the "limiting factor" in shipping calipers or power steering control valves. Even sending in cores before or after a simple purchase of rebuilt calipers for one's car is usually a "zero sum" sort of thing.

    Vette Brakes in Florida is probably the closest to you, but even a trip there if for that sole purpose is going to cost you more than the calipers and valves are worth as cores. Lonestar Caliper sometimes has a truck that goes out to various areas for a core buying spree. You might contact them to see when they might be in your area.

      Thanks Joe. I'll give Lonestar a shout. Last time I was at Kissimmee Paragon had a space there. I was thinking about them tonight and it might be worth a call. I tried Ecklers since I figured they'd be at Lakeland and they said they don't buy 'em anymore. I had a very bad experience with Vette Brakes in the late 80's (sent them J56 calipers off L88 and they mysteriously got lost and we got standard calipers back from 'em, and they'd never do anything about it) so I've never given them another shot at me. My L88 has standard calipers with the center pin mount ground off and drilled for the J56 pads to this day.

        That's exactly how GM made the J-56 calipers. So, you have calipers indistinguishable from the originals. I'm surprised that Vette Brakes didn't come up with the same solution if they lost the ones you sent them. There's an almost infinite supply of J-56 calipers out there masquerading as standard calipers.

          Joe, the "footprint" made by the original pistons on the back of the original J56 pads was considerably bigger than the new calipers would make. I assumed this meant the J56 calipers had the big pistons similar to the 4 piston calipers I got from some full size Chevy (don't recall the exact year) and to put on one of my non Corvette projects. You've really been a great help with various tech questions I've asked in the last several years and I REALLY appreciate it.

            The standard and J-56 calipers were exactly the same except for the lack of pad pin boss and end holes for the dual pins on J-56. For any given year, the caliper half casting numbers were exactly the same.

            1st design J-56 (1966-E67) used the same insulated pistons as 1st design standard calipers. 2nd design J-56 (L1967-75) used a different style insulated piston whereas standard pistons were not equipped with insulators. However, the contact surface OD of the insulated piston was the same or virtually the same as the non-insulated standard piston.

            The caliper piston bores were the same for ALL 1965-82 Corvette regardless of brake option. Fronts were 1-7/8" and rears were 1-3/8".
