    63 corvette brake backing plates

Are any other model GM backing plates the same as a 63 front or rear?

Good question. Hope you get an answer. I ran into problem trying to use generic replacement drums about four years or so back. They did not fit back up to the plates correctly - close, but linings would not engage drum surface right. There was a slight gap between plate and drum. Impossible to adjust right. Had to go back to recut original drums.

          Edward------

The 1963-64 (and 65 w/o disc brakes) Corvette FRONT drum brake backing plates were the same as 1959-64 full size passenger car. The 1963 left side was GM #3832519 which was discontinued and replaced by GM #3858825, the 1964 left side backing plate, in March, 1966. The latter was discontinued without supercession in January 1974. The 1963 right side was initially GM #3832520 which was discontinued and replaced by GM #3858826, the 1964 right side backing plate, in April, 1965. The latter was discontinued without supercession in September, 1976.

The 1963-64 (and 1965 w/o disc brakes) Corvette REAR drum brake backing plates were UNIQUE to Corvettes. The 1963 left side was GM #3820141 which was discontinued and replaced by GM #3847719, the 1964 left side backing plate, in March, 1964. The latter was discontinued without supercession in March, 1972. The 1963 right side backing plate was GM #3820142 which was discontinued and replaced by GM #3847720, the 1964 right side backing plate in March, 1964. The latter was discontinued without supercession in March, 1975.

All of the above is applicable only to standard or J-50 power brakes. J-56 heavy duty brakes used different backing plates.

By the way, the reason that the front drum brake backing plates are the same as 59-64 full size passenger car is that 1963-82 Corvette front suspension is basically the same as 1958-64 Chevrolet full size passenger cars. Many components either interchange or are very similar.

59-64 front Chevrolet passenger car brake backing plates are not exactly the same as a 63 Corvette or Chevrolet backing plate. All 59-62 front backing plates have a slot for brake shoe adjustment, unlike the 63-64 front backing plates which use an adjustment slot in the brake drum.

Bob, I agree with you. The passenger car plate has the adjustment slot and the overall configuration is slightly different. I just took one of each and put them side by side.

                Harry------

In that case, the Corvette front backing plates were never available in SERVICE. The part numbers I provided are the only ones ever available in SERVICE and both front sets are cataloged for both the passenger car and Corvette applications. In any event, whether or not they are exactly the same, they are functionally interchangeable

As Joe knows, the rears are unique. I did a set of 63 arms and the plates were bent and needed to be replaced. Luckily the owner was able to source some good used ones.
