    Exhaust for '65

Who is a good source for an under car exhaust for a '65? I want one that will meet NCRS standards.

    Steve------

If by "NCRS standards" you mean 100% correct with full judging credit, there are none available that will be identical to original systems. The closest you can possibly come is if the car was originally equipped with N-11 off-road exhaust AND you can find an NOS set of these. If you do, you will pay DEARLY for them.

Otherwise, I think the best bet is a Corvette Central exhaust system

Steve, I agree with Joe. If your order a carbon steel system be aware that it will rust very quickly and look like crap. Your choices are stainless or aluminum. Black out where it should have blackout and take a minimal point hit. Also, look at the N11 system available from Gardner. I installed a set of N11's on my 63 and am very happy with them.

I got a set from Corvette Central but had a problem with the fit. Had to send them back. Guess I can try them again and see if new set fits better.

Try to find a NOS set. The sound is unique and has not been duplicated by any of the current fabricators.

A few years ago an exhaust company here in MI came up with a correct sounding N11 system for midyears. It is only sold by Corvette Central.

Steve, I'll bet it was the left side pipe. Was it too short? That is why I went with Gardner.

That's interesting Harry because I have CC exhaust on my 65. It was 1" too long so we cut a piece out of it where it goes through the crossmember and welded it back together. They weren't very helpful; said "that can't be, it's made in a jig." Really? They did offer to replace it but it was a couple of weeks and I had no time and no faith.

John, we did three 63's and that left front pipe was an inch too short. We had to add an inch. There was an extended bend in it that did not match the original design. I bet the pipe started the same length as an original before being put in the jig. I guess on a 65 it's too long.

Anyway, I have a CC set on one 63 and a Gardner set on the other, both are N11. The Gardner sounds better. The Gardner is a little more expensive. You also need to weld the mufflers on as Gardner does not weld them.

When you mention sets installed on 63's; you speak of the 2" or the 2-1/2"?

My 2-1/2"s aluminized set have held up well since 1996. The only thing I really dislike about them is the sound. The mufflers are for use on all thru 1982 so too the fit at the back is not good (too long). I had to modify rear hangers by removing brass ground plates and replacing them with later ground straps. Also had difficulty installing 63 only galvanized heat shields as tips would not go on as far as I'd like, but ok. I'm still tempted to put on a set of cherry bomb mufflers I have (new), but I doubt I'd like their sound either.

Harry, my issue with cc was that the left exhaust pipe did not clear the oil filter canister, and the bracket welded to the muffler was welded too low for the pipe with extension to exit the rear properly. The left pipe was also shorter than the right side. I will probably give Gardner a call. Thanks for everyone's replies.

Highly recommend Gardner, perfect fit, easy to seal weld the rear pipe when all adjustments are complete. My 64 is on their websight, give it a listen. Sounds just like the NOS pipes I put on my 63 in 1990.

I love the oval 2-1/2" pipes. If I could, I'd like to fit 3"or 3-1/2". There is plenty of clearance in the cross member for bigger pipes, like if connected to scavenging headers - cool! IMO, the 63 only bracket may be the only limiting factor.

Sorry for the old man's dream.
