what finish are you using on your original front springs that will receive full points ? The manual says they have a rust preventive ???

The original springs were natural steel (later GM SERVICE replacements under the original part number were often painted black). You can use something like Pre-Lube 6 to more-or-less duplicate the original rust-preventative coating. However, you'll have to re-apply it from time-to-time. My preference is to use a thin coating of a low gloss, clear urethane.

A point loss for a surface protection against rust is good insurance as the point is .045% in the loss column. Really nothing to ever worry about.
