    270 B-R coil?

I picked up what I believe to be an original 270 B-R coil and noticed a difference compared with a repro. With the "270 B-R" facing forward the original has the "+" terminal on the left while the repro has the "+" terminal on the right.

    1. Was this just dumb luck during assembly of the original coil or were they all like that?

    2. When the coil was installed at St. Louis was the coil positioned (or clocked) a certain way? (270 B-R facing forward, facing aft? Positive terminal facing right or facing left?)

    Anal minds, need to know!

    TIA,
    Mike

I can't recall which year Assembly Manual I saw it, but I recall seeing an instruction about the clocking of the coil to prevent the low-voltage terminal contacting the distributor radio shielding. I can not find it in the 1970-1972 AIMs, so i am guessing it is in the 1968 or 1969 manuals.

I (also) have an original B-R 270 off a '73 or '74 [got the distrib as well]. Configured as others have said.
The two letters on mine near the +ve post are "BS" .

Any input regarding Mike's second question about how to "clock" the coil? Nothing in the JG. 1970 AIM 6-B6 has a diagram suggesting (but not specifying) the dist. post (neg. -) points towards the RF of the car. While AIM U69-A6 and A7 have diagrams vaguely suggesting (but not specifying) the coil bracket's opening (where the tightening screw goes) is about midway between the two posts with the neg. post nearest the distributor.

I suspect coils were just installed on the assembly line a bit capriciously depending on who did it, but I thought I'd ask.

The coils came to St Louis, in the C3 era, as an assembly with the mounting bracket. Thus any clocking of the coil to the bracket would have been done by Delco Remy. That is why there are no instructions in the AIM about clocking the coil.

Any information about how Delco Remy clocked the coils?

Or is this minutiae too trivial for even NCRS, and I should just clock it so the wires fit best?

                Re: 270 B-R coil?

When looking in the AIM under LS6 and also under U69 for the addition of Radio it shows negative terminal pointed towards front of engine and positive towards rear. Maybe tweaked a little to the right but that general direction. I also noticed my report coil was slightly larger in diameter than the original I have, the two posts are a slightly different size as the nuts would not fit fro old coil to new one.
