    '67 Right Front Bumper

The beauty (and, the beast) of getting your car judged is you found out all the greatness of your car and all of the inaccuracies of your car. I'm going thru the myriad of details that were recently judged on my car at the Lone Star Regionals. One area of error was my front bumper bolt orientation. I had the bolt heads to the outside and the nuts to the inside and they should have been bolt head inside, nut outside. Removed and replaced the left side very easily. In attempting the fix on the right side, however, the first bolt I removed was wedged in the bumper pretty tightly and when I was finally able to knock it thru the bumper shifted down...firmly!! Question...how many of the nine bolts holding the bumper and it's supports do I need to loosen to adjust the bumper back up? Please see attached.

    thanks,
    Leif

Leif, Just loosen them all and try to adjust the bumper back to a level position, be careful on the fender end bolt as breaking the fiberglass is easy to do. Also note sometimes the bumpers have been bent and straightened by the bumper restorer. this will result in a fitment issue. I can tell you what I did on the fender bolt to keep from breaking the fiberglass ,I installed a lock washer in between the bracket and bumper, this spacer keeps the bumper from cracking the fiberglass when tightening that bolt.

Thanks, Edward. I know these bumpers can be a bear and that's why I was hoping to loosen as few as possible. I have shims on the inside between bracket and fender. Is this where you placed your lock washer?

Leif, I am not sure if 67 used shims at that location, But that is the location I used a lock washer, It is the only area where the brackets hit the fiberglass on the front bumpers. My 63 has no shims on the front, just the rears have some shims. If the AIM calls out for shims it will show them.

Success!! Loosened the two bumper to bracket bolts and the two bracket to frame bolts and then used a large pair of channel locks to compress the bumper and bracket allowing me to insert the correct black phosphate bolt in the correct orientation. While in there, I also replaced the four bracket to frame nuts (both left and right sides). They were cadmium plated and should have been black phosphate as my vin is 20XXX and TIM&JG calls for black phosphate at that location sometime after vin 12000. Little successes...now, I'm going to watch some football.
