Date stamp on back of tach

On the back of the metal housing for my tach is a date stamp -

I would like to re-stamp it back onto the finished metal since it was there before I removed it. Any recommendations on how best to treat this detail?

    Thanks again,
    Pat

    Hi Patrick,
If you're going to re-create it you might consider having a stamp made of a similar size, font, and spacing, at one of the larger office supply businesses.
That's what this one, which is for another dated part, is.
    Regards,
    Alan

not original if you restamp and could be seen as another way to fake stuff....not saying you are doing this but can lead to speculation in the future possibly casting doubt on the car being original

Understood- not my intention at all, only trying to recapture what was there, but I see your point. Any insight on how this detail is judged? or if it is judged at all? I have pics of the stamp, but I realize that can also be questioned as to if they are of the same housing.

Thanks Alan, that is a good suggestion, depending on how the judging question I have plays out, it may be the way to go.

You can't see it, so you can't judge it. I have never seen this detail judged.

if the original date is restamped it is actually preserving the tach. it's always desireable on a restoration to have a correctly dated item.

Re: Date stamp on back of tach

                Hi Patrick,
My take on restoration is to try to restore each part to as close to it's original state as possible.
So therefore many parts and areas get restored that aren't seen (or judged) when the car is assembled.
I realize this 'restoration philosophy' will vary from person to person.
I'm thinking you refinished the tach's case, so 'I' would try to re-stamp it.
On my 71 the date stamp is over the tach's label. That would have been a really tough one to have to duplicate….BOTH the label AND the stamp.
Fortunately, I could leave it alone. I'm rarely that lucky.
Better is the constant enemy of good.
                Regards,
                Alan

Well said and "Good enough" is always the assassin of "Well done" Given the fact that it is not seen and ultimately not judged, I will put it back on and provide pics if ever questioned.
                  Thanks again for everyone's input.
