    Part number ID

I have a GM box group # 2.042 pt # 3733289 it has two 3 1/2" cad plated bolts with knurled shafts my note on the box says 66 to 68 427 with HD . They look like starter bolts . Do they have a 65 396 application ?

Bill, The Oct. '72 P & A 30 B shows these to be starter bolts for several Corvette applications but an exclusion is shown the 396 applications.

These starter bolts were not used for any 1965 L-78 application. Also, they were not used for any 67-68 HD big block application (i.e. L-88). Those applications use the same starter bolts as used for 1965 L-78. The 3733289 bolts are used for starters with cast iron noses. Such starters were used for 1966-68 big blocks except L-88. They were also used for all 1969 applications except L-88/ZL-1 with manual transmission. In addition, they were used for most 1970-81 with manual transmission.

        Bill,

I've included a picture of the outer starter bolt from the '65 396 I restored. The wire clip(s) on the bolt are to be attached to the outer starter bolt to hold the starter motor wiring. I took a deduct at a regional for not having this clip in place. Obviously there should only be one clip but I resized the holes in each of them so that the bolt would fit and then determined which would work best. The repros sold today will not have a large enough hole for the starter bolt to fit through.

            Re: Part number ID

            Bill,

I had black phosphate starter bolts per the current '65 TIJG but was told by a reliable source at the time the car was judged at our chapter meet last April that the bolts should be silver cad or zinc plated and that the wire clip should be in place. I corrected both before going through a regional meet in May and the national convention in July and received no deducts. I've attached a picture of the car's 7352 starter which was judged correct and received no deducts at any of the flight judging events.

NOTE: As you can see in the pictures, my starter nose, solenoid, and bendix cover is not painted, but the other picture shows both are painted. This may need some further clarification. Tony Stein would be the best person to ask this question since he has been greatly involved with the new '65 TIJG re-write and is a seasoned chassis judge.

Also in the 1965 AIM that shows the starter there is a sealer that is to be applied at the area where the starter nose fits into the bell housing cover. I applied 3M strp caulk at this location. It's not in the current TIJG but is shown in the AIM. No points were deducted for this at any of the judging events. I would think that a non-hardening caulking applied via gun could also be used.
