I'm putting the rear shock mount back in and was wondering how to get it back on to the spindle support. I have the D ring hole on the spindle support toward the back and the D threaded shaft on the shock mount is in the D ring spindle support....but there are some splines on the other end of the shock mount. How do you pull this into the O ring opening on the forward hole of the spindle support? Will it draw in completely with the nut when i tighten it? I tried to pound it but no luck. I did clean out the hole so there is no paint obstruction.

Re: 67 installing rear shock mount to spindle support
Dave,
Mine drew right in with the nut being tightened. Be sure the flat is aligned up. Are you using the original shock/strut mount? Replacements may not be sized correctly. If you have after market mount the size/fit may require a bit of massage.- Top

Re: 67 installing rear shock mount to spindle support
It is not the original shock mount. It is original spindle.. What do you mean flat aligned up. I have the shock mount in the d ring hole already...it is a matter of drawing in the spline end into the forward O ring spindle- Top

Re: 67 installing rear shock mount to spindle support
Dave-----
As long as the flat on the spindle support orifice and the flat on the shock mount shaft are "aligned" (if they were not you would not be able to get the threaded end through the orifice in the support) and the shock mount end of the shaft properly oriented, all is well.
The problem is that the current replacement shock mount shafts (as well as even some of those sold by GM towards the end of their availability) have oversize "knurling". The only thing you can do is to SLIGHTLY file down the "knurling". However, I don't really recommend doing this. Simply install the shaft, apply a few extra thumps with a hammer to help engage the "knurling", and tighten the nut to the specified torque. After a few days re-check the torque and install the cotter pin.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
