!967 Horn Contact and Cancelling Cam

The last couple of times I drove my 67 I hear this screeching and metal to metal rubbing sound when I turned the wheel. I took the wheel off today the back of the cancelling cam is really wearing against the spring loaded brass horn contact that is mounted in the turn signal switch. There were a lot of brass particles in the area where they have been rubbing together.

Can I lubricate the back surface of the cancelling cam without loosing the horn function? If so, should I use dielectric grease or something else?

    Thanks,
    Don

Don, Dielectric grease will work just fine.

      Don,
I going by memory, but shouldn't there be a flat brass ring surface for the spring loaded plunger to contact against?

        Gene,

Yes, the bottom side of the plastic cancelling cam includes a brass outer ring that rides against the brass or copper pin in the signal switch. That is where I am getting the wear. But I don't see anything else in the AIM or the parts suppliers other than what I already have.

        Thanks,

          Don,

Take a look at this thread in the archives:

The rubbing sound on a turn is the signal switch horn contact rubbing against the cancelling cam.

See the last couple of posts in the thread for the problem and solution which I had.

My problem was an improper screwhead used for the signal lever to the replacement signal switch, and a warp in the original cancelling cam.

The rubbing wore the signal switch contact and I found copper filings in the steering column. It got so bad that my horn would blow on a hard right or left turn.

The solution was to change the lever screw to a pan head and replace the cancelling cam.

          Hope this helps,

            Thanks,

i noticed that that your old canceling cam was black. Mine is black. My car has a standard column and the suppliers list the black canceling cam for the telescoping column and a white one for the standard column.

Lubricating mine help a little with the scraping sound, but I think I'll order a white one from LIC and see how it works.
