    Starter Brace nut GM 9422273

Does someone have a pic of the correct lock nut GM# 9422273 they can post? This is the nut that attaches the brace and shield to the starter.

    Thanks,

    Bill

    Some fine Fall morning here!
The 273 is a good one.
I believe Joe refers to it as a prevailing 'torque nut'. In laymen's terms it's been squeezed a bit so it's deformed and self locking.
Also, it has interesting raised 'dots', I guess to identify it….2 dots at 12 o'clock, and a single dot at 4 and 8.
I think the 'squeezing' process has left a mark on 2 of surfaces.
Do you have it? I hope so!
    Regards,
    Alan
    Hi Alan,

I do not have the correct nut. I did find a lock nut similar but not original. The local hardware store had a nut but the dots are completely different.

    Thank you for the pics.

It is a fabulous fall day.

    Bill

IMG_0760.jpg 2 schools of thought here. Most early cars I have seen have a 1/4-20 nut with a flanged head, under the head it is knurled to lock in place. This one has RBW markings some have others. I have also seen the style Alan posted, but not till later years. Rich.

        Rich and Bill-------

According to GM, the nut used for 1968-69 was GM #273801. This nut is a 1/4-20 flanged head with serrated face and phosphate-finished. For 1970 and later, GM says the 9422273 nut was used. This is a 1/4-20 prevailing torque lock-nut of the Stover type. It is zinc plated.

A reproduction of the 9422273 is available from AMK Products.

I looked at AMK info….. Bill can buy 8 of them for $3 and go into business!!!!
Also, what size is the 9419274 p.washer?
It looks like it needs to be pretty small in diameter to avoid hitting the side of the brace as the nut is tightened.

I saw the nut in the AMK catalog but wanted to confirm it was the locking type called out for in the AIM. The washer is also available from AMK in bulk. 20 washers for $3.00. (.29 X .50 X .06 FLAT WASHER) Maybe Joe can confirm the dimensions and finish.

I believe the dimensions are correct. Finish was phosphate.

              Thank you Joe!

The finish AMK provides is phosphate for the washers.
