I posted an earlier thread here asking about a hard banging and clunking sound on my 66 Corvette BB coupe in first gear.
As observed by two posters this turned out to be the cushions or snubbers as some call them on the differential bracket and cross member mounting boss.
This was a quick and easy fix overall -- taking about one hour start to finish --- There are three photos below that show the old and new parts and one that shows the contact area in the drive shaft tunnel (red arrows)--- as the cushions compress with age they allow the drive shaft to hit the top of the drive shaft tunnel causing the banging sound ---- Note: this should apply to 63 through 82 cars but check your specific car and shop manuals for your specific year. I hope this helps some other members with similar problems -
Regards
Bill
