    67 Crossmember (Diff Carrier) Problem

After renewing some rear spring bushings I noticed that the diff carrier was higher on the left that the right. It looks like the diff carrier is now resting on the frame brackets on the left side. Before I pull the whole works apart I thought I would see if anyone had an idea as to what is going on.

    Thanks

    Steve

Steve - It appears from the pictures that on the right side, the frame bracket where the cross member mounts to the frame is broken. It even looks like part of the mounting bracket is missing. To further inspect, you will need to disassemble the rear suspension and drop the cross member. It will probably need to be welded to fix. This can be done with the body on. But, it's better to lift the body off the frame so no weight is on the mounting bracket when it is welded.

Well got it all pulled apart today. Yes the mount on the drivers side cracked on the bend and the welds broke away. Time to start cleaning up all the parts, get all the new bushings organized, and make an appointment with the welder.

Sometimes corrosion problems are at the root of these weld breaks. Check carefully for corrosion.

Here is the mount. It broke out on the bend and the welds broke away. Also the main leaf of the spring shows a crack forming from the hole forward on both the top & bottom of the spring.

              Looks lik fatigue not rust/corrosion.

I had a broken one on my 175,000 mile car. On top of that, one of the ears was broken on the differential cover, so not much was holding the differential in place. Someone had put a Baldwin-Motion traction bar on the rear to hold it together as a "bubba fix". It's all correctly repaired now.

Steve - good thing you caught this when you did. Although you can drive these cars with one of those mounts broken, it's not safe to do so. And with no corrosion, the fix is much quicker and more manageable.
