    1971 LT1 Short Block

Does anyone know if GM offered a 1971 LT1 Short Block, essentially a CE short block purchased over the counter, and if so what the GM part number was? I have been able to find the 1970 LT1 short block - 3966921, but haven't been able to find the equivalent for 1971. Thanks for the help!

Yes, the 1971 LT-1 partial engine assembly ("short block") was once available in SERVICE. It was GM #3997472. It was discontinued in February, 1980 and replaced by GM #464152 which was shortly thereafter replaced by GM #474171. The latter was discontinued without supercession in September, 1992.

However, the 464152 and 474171 were really not direct replacements for the 3997472 as both were equipped with the L-46/L-82 hydraulic lifter camshaft. The rest of the assembly was the same, though. I hope no one ever bought one of these replacements and installed mechanical lifters on the existing camshaft, though.

Joe can you confirm that the GM part number I described 399xxxx is for a 70 LT1 short block? If so what is the content of the block? I know where there is one that is from 1974.

Yes, the 3966921 is the 1970 LT-1 partial engine assembly ("short block"). It included an installed GM #3972178 mechanical lifter camshaft. It was discontinued without supercession in June, 1992.

Basically, the 3966921 and 3997472 assemblies were the same except for installed pistons.
