I did that 35 years ago and never had a problem with it. I don't recall welding anything, I might have plugged the hole for the rod I can't recall. I have been running headers the past 8 years now and don't even know what I did with that hear riser, probably in the loft with all the old exh manifolds. I can't say I felt any improvement either, the car ran fine.- Top

Back on subject, if you gut the valve, you will fail the "heat riser function" portion of the "PV" test.- Top

I've had my lift for almost 15 years. If I had to get rid of it, I would quit working on cars. I'm too old and broken to be laying on the ground (actually, it's the getting back up that's really hard).
Back on subject, if you gut the valve, you will fail the "heat riser function" portion of the "PV" test.

I have my FI spacer ground out round and I live in central Florida. Just trying to work up enough gumption to make the change. I hate crawling under my car, including for oil changes. My last one was a disaster, what with driving off the ramps, and a pinched o-ring that dumped lots of oil on my driveway. Fortunately, no damage, but I'm getting too old for this stuff.

Yes, I have considered it. I have a kit that I bought many years ago (believe it is a "Mr. Gasket), but it uses a much smaller diameter filter. I even bought a supply of Wix spin on filters for it, but deceived I liked the heavy gauge canister. Perhaps I will look at this again, due to the later kits seem better and use a larger diameter filter. Guess I'll at least use up the filters I have for the cannister first, only take it in for someone to put the car on a lift.
Thanks for the reminder. I may have them do the spacer change too.

I agree. I had to replace the exhaust donut on my '65 L79 and removal of the clamp to allow the pipe to be free'd up. I actually removed the entire pipe because I had a bad exhaust donut. The pipes were really rusty so it took so time to work the pipe loose from the rear section of exhaust pipe. A little , KROIL or WD-40 sprayed at the pipe joints ahead of time isn't a bad idea to help seperate the pipe joint. A rose bud torch or butane torch to put a little heat in the joint to expand the pipe joint helps also.

You made me laugh. I thought; "is there any better place to take a nap then under your vintage Vette?" I think I'll make up a padded creeper for just that purpose. And at my age, in fact, I may just put that in my last W & T, nay, never mind.

I have had a spin-on filter on the 1970 leave a gasket behind, and I didn't notice it. Spilled a quart or two of Penzoil 30 weight (that's how long ago it was) on the driveway at my folk’s house. It was a gravel drive, so it didn't much matter.
I just wanted to point out that the spin-on is no guarantee of gasket synchronicity. It is just a matter of paying attention to what one is doing. And I acknowledge that gets harder and harder as I age. I assUme others have the same experience as we advance the clock of life.Terry- Top
