First Gear Hammering / Clunking in 66 BB

    HI--

This topic has been discussed before and I have searched the archives for a "Definitive" answer with no luck so -- with advance apologies here is the issue (again):

I have a low mileage 66 big block coupe --- runs and drives like a top -- no issues at all --

Took it out for a drive Sunday and pulled onto the street --- started in first gear and pulled away smoothly --- upon full release of the clutch and moderate acceleration I get a VERY LOUD heavy hammering sound---

I stopped and put the car in reverse and moved it back to the driveway --- went forward again and the same thing -- no hammering in reverse or upon turning into the driveway (hard right turn) --

This has popped up "over-night" so to speak --- no advance warning --- the car was smooth and powerful one day and now the hammering / clunking ---

    So ---some questions:

    1) Has anyone experienced this exact issue?

    2) If so --- what did you do to alleviate the issue?

I have suggestions to check all of the U-joints and possibly replace them-- front and rear main -- left and right half shafts --

Check for a missing weight on the drive shaft --

Check for deterioration of the large rubber washer on the differential mounting ---

Check the sway bars front and rear ---

    3) Did I miss anything? --- Has anyone had this issue and if so how did you solve it?

Thanks in advance for your insight --

    Bill

Sounds like a broken tooth on first gear-lots of work ahead. Have you done a burnout lately?

No I don't do burnouts --- this is a 40+ year old car and does not need that kind of abuse ---

Abuse? That's what a big block was built for, frying tires.

The differential mount is a prime suspect! ...... When the mount torques up & hits the body it's a definite hammering sound.

Thanks Ralph --- that one is on my list --- pretty straight forward to find it so I may replace that regardless ---

              Bill,
              I agree with Ralph.

Thanks Dom -- I will get the car up and off the ground this weekend and run the check list -- the differential mount is suspect #1 !!!

Will let you guys know what I find out.

                Regards
                Bill
