    58 Ballast Resistor - loose tabs

    Hi All!

    My 58 plug life has been getting very short, 3-or-4 cruise night drives and fouled. Had 2x4 Carbs rebuilt, new plug & plug wires, but still same problem. Someone said maybe bad coil. So I'm taking out Mallory pointless distributor and Pertronix coil. Putting back original dual points distributor and coil.

    I notice the screw tabs on the ballast resistor loose, not the screws holding the wires. Are the tabs suppose to be loose, as oppose to being solid within the ceramic?

    Thank you,
    Eric

    Eric;

    Try some tests with a multimeter to see if you at least some continuity.

    Didn't you post a thread about your problems recently? If so, how did you address those issues, specially about your carbs? You didn't provide enough detail information for anyone to analyze your problems and offer suggestions.

        Also what ohm ballast resistor and plug wires are you using?

        Long tip rotor?

        Good quality GM distributor cap?

        two quads tend to run rich............!

          Hi Stu!
          I can't tell if electric or gas problem. Since already new spark plugs Champion RJ12Y(?) and new premium NAPA plug wires, I'm taking out Mallory point-less distributor and Pertronix coil out and putting in back original dual point distributor and coil. I'm also going to buy new ballast resistor. That should take care of electrical side.
          Then I try adjusting fuel/air mixture again on 2x4 carbs. Later, I buy rebuilt original, correct fuel pump to change out Holley.
          If the above does not work, then maybe new single barrel Edelbrock Carb and intake manifold but will not look vintage nice or correct?
          Aloha,
          Eric
