    Loose counter gear shaft - Muncie

    I had to take my Muncie apart after a front bearing retainer bolt stripped. Found another which looks it was damaged during a previous repair. While removing the parts in preparation to install some helicoils I noted the counter gear shaft can be pushed out by hand, no real resistance. From what I've read this is a common source of oil leaks and may cause the counter gear to not deeply engage with the gear set. Any opinions on this? It seems I have two options. Look for someone to fix the current case or buy a replacement. I've heard of some having an 'O' ring installed to take care of the leak. This may work but doesn't address the alignment issues I hear about if the hole is egg shaped now. Installing a bushing seems to be a better approach though I don't know of any local shops who could do this. Last option is a new case from Autogear. Has anybody had experience with the Autogear case? Does the added length cause any installation problems in a Corvette? Will the other castings bolt on to this case? Tail housing, center bearing, and side cover? I recall the Autogear case takes a different input bearing. True? I'm in a time crunch, need to get this car banc together within the next week or two.

    if the muncie wasn't leaking before u removed it, i doubt the slop in the case/cluster shaft is going to be a problem for u. good luck, mike

      Hi Mike. This project began with replacing the clutch which was chattering. I noted the transmission was leaking oil into the bell housing. Found the input nut installed backwards. There may have been another leak from the counter gear shaft, hard to tell with oil everywhere. It's my understanding the counter gear shaft is supposed to be a press fit. Mine certainly isn't that tight. My goal has been to address the clutch chatter, replaced the clutch and resurfaced the flywheel, and address the oil leaks. I think I found the problem with oil coming from the front bearing. Uncertain whether the counter gear shaft bore warrants replacement of the case. I've read about various solutions, RTV, O rings, home made gasket to cover the hole, etc.

        Hi Roger;
        I've repaired a couple of cases over the years by making making a press fit bushing not really that hard to do, any machine shop can make up an aluminum bushing and press it in. Took me 2 hours.

          Roger,
          Also check intermediate plate (between case and tail shaft) for the notch that keeps the counter shaft from spinning.
          If that notch wears completely the shaft will spin and cause it to enlarge the hole at the front of the case.
