My 1959 has been in storage for 7 years. The tachometer cable broke when I reconnected it. I have repaired the cable and dry fitted it and tried to turn it with my fingers. It is very hard to turn. Is this normal? I made a square end tool to turn it at the dash. It turns but not very easy. My question is how hard should the tachometer be to turn at the dash with no cable hooked to it?

Re: 1959 Tachometer
https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...ars-of-storage OK, sorry it was this thread. There was also a similar thread on CF (Corvette Forum) that I replied to and OP never responded there either. Sorry, but it is frustrating when you try to help and poster does not acknowledge the advise be it good or bad. I did reply to you in the above thread however, so I still don't understand why you chose to post this again instead of replying to the original post. Anyway, did you try the suggestions made to you there??- Top

Re: 1959 Tachometer
Dan, I solved the problem with the cable that separated from the end where it goes into the tach. I think the tach being almost seized is what caused the cable problem. I have not turned the tach clockwise but I have turned it counter clockwise but it is hard to turn. I did not want to hook it to the generator until I found out how hard it was to turn normally. The question was answered when Ken said, it should turn easily. I thought there might be a fix to freeing it up with wd40 or some other method but it looks like I am going to have to take it out and send it in for repair. Thanks to everyone that responded to both posts. Jimmy- Top

Re: 1959 Tachometer
Jimmy,
If the cable was heavily greased it may have filled the cup with it. This is what happens when using grease....It's a '67 speedometer, but you'll get the idea.

The tach main shaft should turn freely with no resistance. It could be binding somewhere else inside, so it looks like you need to get it to find out why.

Re: 1959 Tachometer
Yes it was......The owner told me his service guy injected grease with a grease gun at the transmission end of the cable. When he told me that i knew it was going to be nasty. They actually made a gun adapter to put on the ends of the cables long ago. Not good. This was a Speed Minder unit too. The speedo wouldn't go past 40MPH. This on a '67 435 horse car.
I had to completely disassemble the speedo and clean all parts.
