Correct nut on bottom of 58-61 Fuel Injection Air Cleaner

Can anyone post a pic or let me know if the correct nut on the bottom of the 58-61 Fuel Injection air cleaner is square or hex sided? My air cleaner was much abused and put back together frankenstein-style, and the nut is off-center and hex. I'm thinking it should be square.

My 58 box is square (we used to call square nuts 'farmer nuts'). No offense intended to any ag people.

I haven't heard it for a long time. My father taught me that and he grew up on a farm. Now people look at me funny when I use the phrase.

Not really pertaining to this post but just a thought about the FI air cleaners. It appears that the new generation is more interested in using repro air cleaners than spending the bucks on an original.
One can't give away original 58 to 62 and 62 air cleaners any more. The new ones with lots of bling seem to appease the repromobile guys. IT's sad members.
        Very sad. John

Very interesting John. Has the same thing happened with the 63 - 65 FI air cleaners? Thanks,
            Don H.

Ian, mine is hex, not square. I have always thought mine to be original. Sure looks original and has the patina to prove it. So, are there any others that can comment on what type is on their air cleaner?

Mine is hex (1960), also believe original.

I thought mine was square, but I might be wrong. Mine is broken off too, so I can't say for sure, as I have the can but the bolt and nut are filed some place and can't get my hands on them right now. I will say this. The nut is spot welded to the can in three spots. The hole in the can is oversized - almost 7/16 dia., and the spot welds are right on the circumference of the hole, so there is not a lot of holding strength. This combined with the fact that the nut is thick compared to the can thickness, and these two things are probably the reason they break easily.

Perhaps John DeGregory can chime in. He should know for sure. If I am wrong, I apologize.

So it is sounding like the nut on mine is original then as it is also hex and pretty beat-up looking...

AN Orginal late 62 air cleaner has a hex nut. An orginal early '58 FI air cleaner has a hex nut. An old repro has a square nut.

Ian, WHat we have to be careful of is this. Never say never. Just say typical and not typical. Not speaking just to you.

One time an engineer from Rochester Products made fun of me and our favorite club. He said the problem with us is we expected everything to goABC.
Well Frank Sciabica said it just did not happen that way on the assembly line nor in the engineering center.
Frank said it was hectic and whatever they got to run went out the door.

I'm happy with this thread though. Haven't seen this info otherwise. Plus mine has a hex nut; so it's "typical"
