96 speedo gone beserk 140 mph-220 mph etc???

My Friday evening Corvette ride turned out to be not so fun. Out of no where the speedometer was bouncing all over the place, anywhere from 38 to 220 mph! The WORST part of it was the odometer was going up 4-5 times the actual miles being driven as well. I'm not sure of the exact amount, but our 34 mile round trip actually showed up as around 100!!!. This was accompanied by the warning chime every 10 minutes or so (but no warning indicator lights). Then to top it off, just as we pulled in, the "service ride control" indicator came on!?. The Vehicle Speed Sensor was just replaced by the local Chevrolet dealer last year. (twice actually..the broke the first one installing it-had to order another) I'm going to break out the service manual, but I'll be surprised if it lists this symptom. Ever run into something similar? 1973 LS-4 454 coupe owned 24 years 1996 LT-4 Collector Edition coupe owned 13 months Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA-currently on tap!

It's either the VSS or the BCM. Pull the codes.

My scan tool didn't show any codes?? Does the old GM Tech 1 scan tool have any advantages over the latest scan tools? My Actron (I know it's entry level compared to Snap -on and the like!) has worked pretty well on my daily drivers.

        SOLVED,

Chevrolet dealer replaced VSS (supplied by me), and problem seems to be resolved. Chevrolet didn't charge for the labor, as their repair failed within a year. Didn't reimburse me for the part because I bought it on-line (had to, they would have had to order it anyway!). Small potatoes though, just HAPPY it's working again. Pretty sad quality control for GM part to fail in less than a year and less than 1200 miles. At least it wasn't the BCM!
