    C2 Throw-out bearing noise?

Not all the time but some day's the throw-out bearing will squeal and then some day's or weeks it won't has anyone had this happen with there clutch and is it just a matter of finding that perfect adjustment, I wouldn't think the bearing would be bad as it only does it sometimes. thanks for any input. Hey Jim - do not know which year or motor you are talking - but if it is squealing at any time something's not right. Time to drop the transmission and bell housing to inspect. It could be a failing bearing, a worn clutch fork, worn fingers on the pressure plate, or a worn transmission input shaft housing or a combination of any or all.

I have had the same problem over the past few summers when I drive my car. It does it right as I am letting off pressure on the pedal. It is very intermittent and will go for long periods with no noise. I have replaced the pilot shaft bushing, clutch fork and throw out bearing. Have rebuilt the transmission and the clutch and pressure plate look like new. it doesn't squeal when I depress the clutch, just as I begin to release pressure. I have posted threads about this problem in the past and have not been able to resolve the issue. sometimes it just chirps a little bit and mostly when the car is first started when still cold. I'm just going to drive it until it get worse or something fails. I'll soon be putting it in storage for the winter. I've had the transmission out twice and all looks fine. Good luck with yours.

Hi Jeff this is the same thing that mine does just as you start to let the pedal up and yes I won't pull anything apart until it fails because it can go a month of driving sometimes without making any noise thanks for your info. JR

                Re: C2 Throw-out bearing noise?

                Gentlemen,

There may be a problem with the way the clutch fork is resting on the throw out bearing. The fork is supposed to rest entirely inside the groove of the throw out bearing. Sometimes they are assembled on the outer lip of the throw out bearing and that allows for play when the clutch is being released. The entire clutch fork with the flat spring should be inside the large groove on the throw out bearing. Maybe you can find one of the do it yourself videos on You Tube to explain this procedure. Good luck!

To add to the thread give some thought to the bearing not sliding smooth on the transmission front bearing retainer. In the 63 cars this retainer was aluminum and had problems with wear. I believe there should be a small bit of lube at this junction but I don't have my assembly manual in front of me.

                    Re: C2 Throw-out bearing noise?

Guys, Thanks for the additional feedback. I was careful when installing the transmission to make sure the throwout bearing was properly installed on the clutch fork as this can be easy to get wrong. I also replaced the front bearing retainer on the transmission during the rebuild as the old part did show wear. I suspect the problem will become more consistent over time, but for now the thought of laying under my car with it on jack stands and going through another transmission removal is not something I would look forward to doing. I think my body would majorly protest. Thanks again.
                    Jeff

A little update Friday went for a 140 mile ride and not one whisper from the clutch no noise at all, I think for some reason it is the pilot bushing that decides to make noise once in a while for some unknown reason
