I am restoring my '67 L79 A.O. Smith bodied coupe. I am trying to figure out the proper appearance on the rear door jamb joint where the bird cage is joined and riveted to the fiberglass body. The area at the end of the rain gutter where the metal opens out and slopes down to meet the fiberglass. the metal is about 1/8" lower than the fiberglass it joins. A sealer was used to join and seal the two pieces. In my car this sealer was only used at the joint and very 'casually' applied. the black sealant you see on the attached picture is my attempt thus far to duplicate the original look.
A lot of the sealer had broken away but it appeared that it was quickly applied with no attempt to smooth it out to make the joint as finished as possible (to make it look like there was almost no joint at all). I looked at a 'Bloomington Gold' car in our shop, obviously restored (a well done restoration). On that car the metal area was carefully filled with just a small depression where it meets the fiberglass. Can anyone tell me what that joint should would look like on an original A O Smith body? Will appreciate your help, Jim Baker
