My 64 L84 built late November 63 has a 3825656 with the embossed part number. The AIM shows a change 9/17/63 to the 3853879 flexible part. I read in prior posts the comment of a change mid 64 but this is not a big point of discussion. My only thought are 1. that I have the wrong part which I don't think is right or 2. that the factory ran out old inventory before making the change. Does anyone have data on this? The pic is just for reference of the rubber elbow I'm talking about. This is likely the later flexible version. |

Re: FI Air Cleaner Elbow
Larry, I can't speak to this particular change, but the AIM change date often doesn't match when the parts were actually used. Realistically, though, I sincerely doubt anyone would go to the significant trouble of replacing a flexible hose with an earlier stiff one. Its not easy to put those early ones on, so yours probably came that way...Mike

Re: FI Air Cleaner Elbow
Let me ask a different but very related question. I read on the LIC website that the originals were 3/16 thick and the repro is only 1/8. Mine is 1/8 but the part number appearance is a little different than the repro picture I have. Were some originals 3/16 thick? If so, was there a running change from 3/16 to 1/8 on the 63/early 64 part? The "flexible" part looks even thinner than 1/8.
Stated differently, could my 1/8 part be original or does that thickness mean it is repro? It certainly looks like it has been there a long long time and it is getting very un-flexible.Last edited by Larry M.; September 21, 2014, 03:49 PM.- Top

Re: FI Air Cleaner Elbow
Larry, Can't see much of your hose but the originals by now are hard as a rock. I have one on myu 63 for judging but plan on taking it off. The air cleaner adapter hose (not an elbow) acts like a shock absorber. You don't want to be driving your car much with an original as the end results may be cracked fiberglass.
I don't know the thickness but would guess it's at least 1/8" thick.
The rubber ones were an excellent repro for driving. You actually need two. Original and repro.
You may have the original right now. Can't measure it for you now. Car being used as a shelf as that's about all a trailer gueen is good for it seems. LOL John- Top
