    C2 and C3 side exhaust

Did the C2 and C3 side exhaust system have mufflers inside the pipes? If so are the mufflers replaceable ?

    In a word NO

they are units and will need to be replaced as a unit

You can have a muffler shop repair them with repo parts but I dont think GM serviced any parts, only whole assemblies l or R

You would buy a new baffled section and reuse the header pipe and tip. At this point a whole new assembly is probably the better choice, especially if the side pipe is old and worn or corroded.

He was asking if there was muffler in the pipe if you read the post. I assumed he thought there was a muffler inside the crimped section & what you suggest doesn't make any sense & almost impossible to do.

            Ken:

How do you think that Allen's and Sweet Thunder make their reproduction side pipes?? They use an exhaust header pipe for the specific type of engine, a chambered/baffled section, and a chrome or SS tip. At one time these items were sold individually. I remember them from the earlier LICS catalogues, especially the chambered/baffled section and the chrome tips. Also from Allen's website.

No one said it was easy or practical, but if you wanted to replace a component you could do so. But a welder was required.

Over at Corvette Forum a few guys made their own sidepipe chambered/baffled section by taking the original section and then adding fiberglass muffler material to make it less noisy. MasterDave (CF Moderator) was one of those guys.

            FWIW.

Less noisy... who would want that?!

All kidding aside, when the original side exhaust mufflers or baffles get burnt out inside they do get quite loud, but I like them that way. No better sound than a solid lifter small block.

                Hi Walter,
You asked about the 1969 side exhaust too.
The 69 exhaust actually is much more like a traditional muffler that is long and thin.
It's 41" long and about 5" wide. In profile it's the shape of an 8.
The head pipe and turned-out tip are welded to the muffler.
When it's time to replace the muffler the whole side pipe is replaced.
Usually the owner's hearing has degraded to such a degree that he never realizes it's time for a replacement.
                Regards,
                Alan
