54 shifter to body

I know Ive asked a similar question. My carpet is done and Im going to install the shifter. Can the carpet go between the shifter housing and the fiberglass or does the shifter body need to be in contact with the fiberglass. It make a big difference because the beauty ring doesnt cover much carpet. It would seem if the carpet was in between the shifter body and the fiberglass that it would make for a poor. sloppy connection as the screws arent all that big to pull it real tight. If the shifter body needs to be tight against the glass, the carpet would need to be an exact cut so the ring covers it. I dont want to screw this up. Thank again!!

the trim ring goes over the carpet - then the shifter - then the chrome bell cover.
It takes a juggle to get it in.
cut the center hole for the shifter
use an awl or something sharp for the 4 screw holes

Thanks Chris, got it in there. The flat side of the beauty ring can have some carpet behind it. I carefully used 1 inch 8/32 screws to snug it down really tight. Seems like a strog connection.

yes - there will be carpet behind the trim ring.
