I recently purchased a 1972 LT-1 built in June 1972, serial number 23694. It currently has a 1111153 distributor installed. According to "Corvette by the Numbers" this is a distributor from a 66 327/300 without A.I.R.. I'm guessing a previous owner installed this distributor when they removed the TSC solenoid and the A.I.R. system. My question is which distributor is correct for my car. "Corvette by the numbers" shows a 1112101, and also a (2nd design) 1112167. Was there a changeover date? Thanks,Mike

Re: 1972 LT-1 Distributor
Thank you Roy. I've got lot's to do to get this car back in top condition. It was maintained over the last twenty five years by a professional mechanic, but not one that had any reverence for originality. Consequently, I'll be needing a correct water pump, fuel pump, etc., etc.. Fortunately, all the really important stuff is numbers matching and correct. It's a beautiful car with lots of potential, and to top it off, it's an a/c car.Would you be kind enough to take a look at your valve cover bolts. I suspect the head marking is an "R".Thanks again for your response.- Top

Re: 1972 LT-1 Distributor
I'm wondering what the 1112167 (2nd design) for the 72 LT-1 was all about?Has anyone ever seen one?Roy V's LT-1 was a July build and had the 1112101 installed, and that was getting toward the end of the 72 production.- Top

Re: 1972 LT-1 Distributor
I am in the process of restoring my 72 LT1 to NCRS specs. The engine has been rebuilt and now looking to fine up the carb and fire systems etc. The original distributor has 69,000 miles on it and should be rebuilt, as my mechanic pointed out that it has too much slop in the bushings to keep the engine in perfect time through its rev range. I can not find anyone who rebuilds these original tach driving distributors on the web. Can anyone point me in the right direction to having it rebuilt? Heading to Carlisle in 2 weeks with it....Thank you. 59746- Top

Re: 1972 LT-1 Distributor
I also have heard many good things about Lars Grimsrud. However, I spoke with him a month ago about doing some work on a QuadraJet and he told me it would have to wait until later this year because he was busy with his racing season. If time is not a concern he would probably be a good choice. I have also heard many good things about Dave and Chuck Anderson who operate Automotive Performance Unlimited in Fort Worth (817-763-8115). I know they have a Sun Distributor Machine and can not only replace the bushings, but also set the proper curve on the distributor. In addition to my LT-1, I also have a 72 base engine coupe that needs a distributor rebuild and I plan on having Dave and Chuck do it sometime this Fall when I return to Texas. Hope this helps.- Top

Re: 1972 LT-1 Distributor
Do you have points or transistor ignition? I hear Bill Clupper is the man on points type distributors. You can reach him through this board. For TI distributors it's Dave Fiedler. His company is TI Specialties. I don't have personal experience with either of them, but have often heard good results.

Re: 1972 LT-1 Distributor
Mike,
Another option for your distributor work is Jerry MacNeish of Camaro High Performance, Inc. I used Jerry 11 years ago for both a distributor and carb tune up. His work is top notch and continues to work well in my LT-1. I had both a mechanical tuneup on the distributor and carb as well as a cosmetic restoration of the carb.

Re: 1972 LT-1 Distributor
Thanks Michael. I called Chuck today and he is very gracious on the phone. He gave me some other tips on my LT1 that I didn't know about. I appreciate your advice as well as the other NCRS members who commented on this thread. Thank you to y'all! Darren- Top
