Should we be checking GM oil filters

I read car and Drivers long term road test on the C7 needed a new engine as the current model died. They said they found metal chips in the oil coming from the filter. This is not the first time I heard of this happening. My brother picked up and oil filter for his 57 Ford from a local auto parts store and he also found fine chips of medal in the box the filter was in?

NO, if you get a part/filter with issues take it back and always check a part before install which is sound practice
