    Muncie Input Shaft Bearing Nut

Is this nut installed backwards? I see a slender wrench offered for servicing this nut, suggests a regular wrench won't fit?
It looks like it was nicked, wonder if it should be replaced.

    Yes, installed backwards.
I'd change the nut AND the retainer, shown in your other pic, if its grooved bad.
Be sure to install the nut correctly including staking it at the hole.

Do you know of a vendor you would recommend from whom I may purchase replacement parts and the thin wrench?

As Bob mentions, the nut is left hand thread and I also recommend that you replace it. The nut, GM #591150, was also recently discontinued by GM. However, it's available in the aftermarket with no problem.

There was once a special wrench for this nut. It might even still be available. However, it was really only a thin, open end wrench of the correct size with some early versions having an off-set on the lever section. If you're careful, you can use a regular open-end wrench without too much trouble.

Tip: If you want a wrench equivalent to the "special" wrench, just buy a cheap wrench of the right size (I forget what the size is but you can measure the nut) and grind the head of the wrench thinner.

              AGREED!
I've been rebuilding 4spds (mostly Muncies) for over 45yrs and I've been buying all my 4sp parts from Larry for about 35yrs. He will have any part you need plus the wrench for the gland nut. You won't find anyone finer to do business with.
