'64 300HP with Power Glide - getting proper vacuum for the tranny....

Here is a question for anyone who has a '64 with a 250 or 300HP engine and Powerglide (M35)..... I was inspecting the intake manifold on my 300 HP car yesterday, and discovered that someone had put a 3/8" pipe plug in the threaded vacuum hole in the top of the cast iron manifold.... to get vacuum, the small vacuum line coming up from the tranny has a double outlet on it - one running to the distributor vacuum advance and the other running to the vacuum line in the front of the carb (a Carter AFB...)..... According to the AIM, the vacuum line from the tranny should be connected to a "connector" going into the manifold...... I am having trouble getting the tranny to "kickdown" when accelerating.....Does anyone else have this type of set up......? I think someone "monkeyed" with this set up since it doesn't square with the AIM....Garry Eastwood#38705

    Garry -

The AIM is pretty confused on this issue, and gets worse when you look at the vacuum lines and source connections with J50 power brakes and with C60 air conditioning.

Photos below shows one I saw a couple of years ago ('64 300hp with Powerglide and power brakes) which was set up as you describe above - the vacuum pipe from the modulator runs forward to a tee that has a rubber hose to the distributor vacuum advance, and continues forward to the vacuum source at the front of the carburetor. The vacuum source on the top of the intake manifold is used by the power brake hose to the booster. It has a "homey" look to it, but performed flawlessly - I know the owner.

I'm not a Powerglide guy, but as I recall, the modulator controls upshift action, and the downshift action is controlled by the kickdown linkage adjustment.

Nice pics John, The same basic hookup was used on the early FI cars that had a powerglide. The same engineering I should say.
Vacuum advance line/hose was interruped with a plastic T. One leg of the T went to the powerglide. THen the line continued onto the FI Plenum or air meter.
      Same logical idea. JD
P.S> Once again on the old FI's with powerglide the AIMS is poorly drawn. Or maybe suffers from too many Xerox's.

        John & John....

thanks guys, for the responses..... It's interesting that the AIM doesn't show this "double attachment" on the vacuum line.... it only shows the single attachment going to the brass connector screwed into the manifold...

1963 used the same "T" setup as there was no boss in the 63 manifold for vacuum and if you had power brakes there was another "T" at the PVC fitting behind the carburetor to allow the crankcase vent tube go into the PVC on one side and the power brake hose on the other side.

Uh..., yeah - like the crankcase ventilation setup. What's with that? What's in the vent hole at the rear of the block?

This was the setup on the '63 w/PG we used to own. Modulator valve line to a Tee with a hose to the vacuum advance, with another pipe at the Tee to the port at the front of the AFB as John's pic showed. The car came to us with '67 style Power front disc brakes and aftermarket A/C.

It's a 350 block - no vent hole at the rear of the block - it has a breather vent at the front of the RH valve cover instead for the "intake" side of the PCV, and the oil fill tube with sealed cap to a restricted-orifice fitting at the carb base for the "exhaust" side.
