Interesting. It's obviously a mark from the company that made the sheet metal.Vice-Chairman (West), Michigan Chapter NCRS

I agree with Pat, I would bet that every so many sheets of the stock were ink stamped, and likely not to many Ink stamped tanks really ever survived after 50 years as your tank did.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: 1965 blue ink stencil on gas tank
Note that what Bill posts in his photo is not a stenciled mark. It is an ink rolled mark made in the production of the steel.
Many, many Corvette gas tanks had stenciled part numbers applied. There is a photo that has been around for years of a large stack of tanks at the St. Louis factory with ST LOUIS and the part number stenciled onto the side of the tank.
So, finding a part number or ST LOUIS on the tank is not uncommon. Finding the ink rolled stamp - now that's a rare one.

Re: 1965 blue ink stencil on gas tank
That blue ink marking was applied when the sheet of steel was rolled, between the last set of rolls in the terne-coater and the coiler; it includes the date it was rolled, the alloy code, and the heat number of the caster pour from the furnace. It was only useful to the end-use customer for traceability with the steel producer if stamping problems were encountered (splits, etc.).- Top

Yep!!! Found the exact same ink stencil on VIN 22161, a late 396 convertible. Original tank is stored in the basement.
