    Help with Date coding my the Alt on 70 LS-5

    Hello;

    I have my Technical book for my 70 LS-5 but still needing some help in date coding the current Alt on the car.

    My car is an A/C LS-5 so I know that I should have a 1100 884 Alt. What is on it now is a 1100 900.

    You can see from the pic it is stamped 9L26. Does that mean 1969, November 26th???

    thanks for the help. I would like to find the correct 1100 884 and use this one as trade.

    That's correct. 9L26 would be November 26th, 1969.

      Yes, the car "should" have an 1100884. However, I just cannot fathom a rare alternator like an 1100900 finding its way onto your car accidentally, especially if it's date-correct for your car.

        I agree with Joe. What's the build date of your car? I would bet it's your original.

          Sorry for the delay.

          My my car was built on the first day of production Jan 5th 1970.

          Many of my parts are dated in the Nov and December timeframe.

          I cannot account for why this is the alt on my car. Who knows????

          All the documents I've seen say I should have the 1100 884 for my AC car

          Now I do know this. When I bought this car I got a lot of history. It when though a frame off restoration starting back in 1987-91.

          At that time the owner decided not to put the compressor stuff back in but the rest of the AC stuff is there. I guess it is certainly possibLe that he installed the correct alt at that time. That's 25 years ago. Things might not have been quite so rare then.

          Maybe someone will want to do some trading because the 884 seems pretty rare.

            Believe me, the 1100900 alternator was rare 25 years ago. It's one of the rarest of all Corvette alternators. It's ONLY PRODUCTION application was 1970 Corvette and it was only available in SERVICE for a very short period of time being discontinued in January, 1971. How many of these do you suppose they would have sold in SERVICE from January, 1970 until January, 1971 when the only cars that used them were brand new? I'd guess just about the only ones that would have gotten pulled out of GMSPO inventory would have been those to replace defective original alternators under new car warranty.

            I suppose it's possible that when the restoration of the car was done, the owner was stymied in finding an 1100884 and when he found a date-correct 1100900 he just used that. I highly doubt it, but it's within the realm of possibility.
